In the US Department of State's annual diversity visa lottery (DV-2014), approximately 100,000 entries are chosen to be eligible for 55,000 US immigrant visas. The number of entries chosen exceeds the total number of visas available because there will be people with winning entries who will not follow through with the visa process, and there will also be people who cannot qualify for the visas, even though their entries were selected.
Although people can register for the lottery at the Department of State website, many people use the services of immigration attorneys and others to submit their registrations.
